The Need for Speed racing series has been around for a long time—the first game launched in1994, and the newest addition, Need for Speed Rivals, is the twentieth in the series. Rivals allows players to take on the role of either a Racer or a Cop and complete challenges across an open world environment. It was a launch title for the PS4 and first launched on November 15, 2013. PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 versions followed on November 19, and it released as an Xbox One launch title on November 22. Versions for the Wii U and PS Vita were not made, due to the poor sales of the previous game on those systems. Although it suffers from some issues with bugs and glitches, Need for Speed Rivals received generally mid-range to good reviews.

The developers put a great deal of effort into making sure that the less powerful consoles would still deliver a top-notch Need for Speed experience, as they didn’t want their fans to feel they were getting a lesser version if they didn’t have a next-gen console. Therefore, there are no gameplay differences, although some players feel the multiplayer servers are better for the PS4 and Xbox One. As expected, the graphics still cause a big difference between PS3/Xbox 360 versions and PS4/Xbox One versions. On the PS3 and Xbox 360, the resolution is lower, the visuals are noticeably of lesser quality, and the effects are not as striking.

Additionally, there are almost no differences between the PS4 and Xbox One versions, except a few details that put the PS4 version in the lead. The PC version has some graphical advantages, but they mainly relate to minor world details such as grass and crates—which most players will speed on by and not notice very much, anyway—and shadow filtering.

The performance of Need for Speed Rivals is the same no matter what system you play it on. 30 fps is the standard across all versions, and all version share the same occasional frame rate difficulties, although PC players can adjust the properties in Origin to boost it to 60 fps if they know how.

Overall, therefore, Need for Speed Rivals is a pretty even game across all systems. Players who desire the best graphics will likely lean toward the PS4, Xbox One, or PC versions, but no matter what you choose, the core experience will remain the same.
